Will Rogers

The primary objectives of ‘EQUATORIA - A WALK ACROSS AFRICA’ will be to bring global awareness to those countries that have agreed to 'The Ottawa Land Mine Treaty of 2009'. The Ottawa Treaty or the Mine Ban Treaty, formally the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, bans completely all anti-personnel landmines (AP-mines). There were originally 855,000 signatories of the petition launched by the International Campaign to ban landmines in 1997; when the Convention was opened for signature, it was signed by 133 countries; as of 10 May 2009, there were 156 States Parties to the Treaty. Thirty-seven countries have not signed the treaty (click here for full list). The hope is to convince countries that have to date not signed the treaties, to finally, for all of humanity, ‘do the right thing’.

Additionally, in a world increasingly concerned about environmental sustainability, where the actions of the economically developed nations have devastating effects upon those living in the developing areas of our planet, ‘EQUATORIA - A WALK ACROSS AFRICA’ will bring global awareness to the inherit rights of all humans. Regardless of whether you live in London or Lilongwe, New York or Nacala, your inherent human rights must include the right to:
  • Fresh Food
  • Clean water
  • Clean air
  • Shelter
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Safety
  • Freedom of speech, religion, travel and assembly
Prior to Julian's departure, invitations will be extended to global leaders of economics, politics, environmental initiatives, medicine, science, arts, crafts, media, academics and ordinary people to invite them all to come to Africa to join him to walk a mile or two along his walk across Africa to discuss how we as a species can collectively make a lasting difference for the future of humanity. The content gathered during this extraordinary 21st century expedition will later be presented in the documentary film ‘EQUATORIA - A WALK ACROSS AFRICA’.
